Mind the Gap: Automating Adoption with AI for High-Impact Learning

The Adoption Gap is a strategic framework for eliminating high-effort, low-impact course development in favor of just-in-time resource optimization that first leverages existing organizational assets—such as technical documentation, help centers, and YouTube content—to meet immediate learner needs. It then utilizes AI and Learning Experience Platforms (LXPs) to amplify the power of these resources by synthesizing them into dynamic, structured learning paths.

This approach creates massive efficiency, saving learning teams significant time and effort by automating the "Adoption" phase of the journey, which acknowledges that users consume content through search and targeted discovery rather than linear courses during this stage. By removing the need to build exhaustive materials for this middle phase, learning teams can focus their expertise on the high-impact areas of Onboarding and Mastery.

I also created this infographic with help from AI. I used NotebookLM and fed it my Google Slide presentation for The Adoption Gap, which is also the foundation of the video above. I created the slides for the presentation, wrote a script for the video, and then used Gemini and ChatGPT to polish and clarify a few things. I copied the final script into the notes of the presentation and then asked NotebookLM (which is running Gemini in the background) to produce an infographic. A great example of how we can use AI to enhance what we do rather than replace it.

A visualization of The Adoption Gap as an elevated pathway traversing the three core phases of the user learning journey.
